What is the difference between a junk journal, a glue book, and a scrapbook?

A junk journal is a book made by hand using an eclectic mix of found, salvaged, and recycled papers.

  • The Process: You sew or bind the pages together yourself into sections called "signatures."
  • The Materials: It heavily features "junk" like brown paper bags, junk mail envelopes, music sheets, ledger paper, coffee-dyed papers, and clothing tags.
  • The Vibe: Tactile, vintage, and highly interactive. The pages are deliberately uneven, featuring flips, flaps, hidden pockets, and removable ephemera. It can be used as a diary, an art journal, or left as a standalone piece of art.
A glue book is a relaxed, casual notebook dedicated purely to the act of cutting out images and gluing them down.
  • The Process: Instead of making a book from scratch, you usually use a mass-produced base like an old composition book, catalog, or thrifted textbook. You simply glue images directly over the existing text.
  • The Materials: Magazine clippings, catalog pictures, stickers, postmarks, and advertisements.
  • The Vibe: Therapeutic and informal. There is very little to no writing, drawing, or complex pocket-making. It is about the satisfying process of arranging images to create a visually dense, flat collage without overthinking the artistic outcome.
A scrapbook is a chronological archive designed to preserve memories, stories, and photographs for future generations.
  • The Process: You arrange photos on large, uniform pages (traditionally 12x12 or 8.5x11 inches) and slide them into protective plastic sleeves inside a heavy binder.
  • The Materials: Coordinated paper collections, manufactured die-cuts, alphabet stickers, and strict "photo-safe" (acid-free) adhesives to prevent pictures from fading or turning yellow over time.
  • The Vibe: Clean, structured, and narrative-driven. The layout is designed around the photograph, accompanied by neatly written captions detailing the dates, names, and locations of the events pictured.
